A new trailer for the upcoming Resident Evil 4 Remake has offered a closer look at protagonist Leon S. Kennedy, with Capcom showing off a more mature look for the character. Resident Evil 4 Remake was announced during the June PlayStation State of Play, with a teaser trailer offering a glimpse of the remake alongside a March 2023 release date.
The original Resident Evil 4 is widely recognized as one of the best horror-action games of all time, and while Capcom pivoted harder into action with both Resident Evil 5 and 6, 4 is often seen to be the strongest game in the franchise when it comes to successfully walking the line between true scares and action-packed gameplay. The title has been ported to many platforms in the years since its release, but fans have been hoping for a full remake for some time. Rumors that Capcom would be releasing a remake for new-generation systems have been circulating for many months, even by PlayStation itself in a 2021 PlayStation Showcase that offered a tiny hint at a potential Resident Evil 4 remake.
Revealed during the June 13 Capcom Showcase, the company gave a more thorough look at some of the gameplay, world, and characters of the Resident Evil 4 Remake. Reiterating that the story would innovate on the original’s while still remaining faithful, the trailer focuses mostly on Leon S. Kennedy himself, with the character sporting a much more mature, sombre, and world-weary appearance. Drawing attention to Leon’s new gritty look, Capcom developers have teased that his new appearance will work in conjunction with the terrors he’ll experience within the remake.
Based on one of the most beloved video games of all time, the new release has a lot to live up to. Capcom has already teased Resident Evil 4 Remake’s reimagined story, which could well mean players will experience something entirely new when it comes to things like Leon and Ashley’s partnership, the inclusion of Ada Wong, or even some of the game’s classic and memorable enemies and bosses. While it’s unclear just what Resident Evil 4 Remake will offer in terms of new content, it seems Capcom is working to provide a story that will appeal to fans old and new.
Resident Evil 4 Remake takes place some years after the events of Raccoon City which have helped shape Leon into the hardened fighter he is today, so it makes sense that Capcom would want to present a grittier and more mature-looking Leon for his next outing. At this point in the Resident Evil timeline, Leon has seen his comrades dies, battled hordes of zombies, and challenged a range of T-Virus-infected beings, and this trauma seems to show in his remodelled face. Whether or not Leon will receive a new, more mature, backstory to suit his look remains to be seen, but it seems that Resident Evil 4 Remake is set to add even more details into the growing lore of the franchise.
