Although it was not one of their best games, Los Angeles FC took advantage of the fact that DC United was down a man and Kwadwo Opoku, who had just five minutes on the pitch, scored the only goal to give his team its seventh consecutive victory and consolidate its position as the best in MLS.
Opoku appeared in the 67th minute to score the goal in a match that had been difficult for them at the Banc of California Stadium, and it was not until DC United was down a man due to the red card of Steven Birnbaum that they were able to get on track to win.
The pre-match note was that both Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini were not even on the bench, the team announced that it was back to load management just as it was in the 5-0 win over Charlotte FC.
LAFC’s first half against DC United was one to forget, the home team had few approaches to David Ochoa’s goal, and when they did it was without danger, with shots to one side or above the goal. Carlos Vela tried, but generally went unnoticed in the match.
In the first 45 minutes, and to everyone’s surprise, Wayne Rooney’s team was the most dangerous, but goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau made two extraordinary interventions against shots by Jackson Hopkins and Victor Plsson.
LAFC also struggled at the start of the second half. Carlos Vela had a dangerous approach, but shot almost wide. Then came Birnbaum’s sending off for a double caution, and that was vital for the game to be resolved in favor of the home team.
With an extra man on the pitch, LAFC scored the winning goal. Carlos Vela took the ball and sent it to Cristian Arango who, inside the box, did not get desperate, saw that Opoku had a better option to open the scoring and sent him a service so that the African, who had only been on the field for 5 minutes, could solve the match.
Although LAFC had more opportunities to increase the score, they failed. On the field, the best team in MLS was not seen imposing its superiority against one of the worst, but it got back to three points, now to reach 57 units at the top of the Western Conference and remain as the best team in the tournament, while DC United remained with 22. LAFC suffered, but reached seven wins in a row and nobody can stop them.
