God’s Favorite Idiot arrived on Netflix on June 15, and it’s for sure one of the best comedy series of the year. How could it not be with Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone in the lead and behind the scenes? The real-life couple will always bring the laughs!
In the new comedy series, Falcone plays Clark, a tech employee who’s struck by lightning and soon starts glowing. He then discovers he’s a messenger for God and must work to help stop the apocalypse with the help of his co-workers, friends, and girlfriend (McCarthy).
It’s the latest collaboration for the married couple, who have worked on films and series like Tammy, Nobodies, Life of the Party, and Netflix’s superhero comedy Thunder Force together over the years.
But what’s next after the initial premiere of the series? Here’s what we know so far about the future of God’s Favorite Idiot, the next eight episodes, and its chances of returning for a second season after its arrival on Netflix this summer.
As of its premiere on June 15, 2022, Netflix has not renewed or canceled God’s Favorite Idiot. That’s normally the case for a new original series, unless said series had been greenlit for more than one season ahead of its premiere or had been designated a limited series.
Netflix ordered 16 episodes of God’s Favorite Idiot, and eight episodes of that order were released on June 15. The remaining eight episodes still need to be filmed before they can be released, hence why 16 episodes weren’t added to Netflix at once. The good news is more episodes are coming!
It seems as though these eight episodes will be marketed as “part 2” of the first season rather than the second season (though the reverse could be true, too), which means questions will remain regarding the future of the series. Whether Netflix renews the series beyond its 16-episode order will depend on viewership.
The series began filming in Byron Bay in New South Wales, Australia in March 2021 and wrapped production in June 2021 after previously being expected to finish filming in November 2021. While Netflix’s post-production periods on comedies don’t typically last a year, God’s Favorite Idiot was released one year later in June 2022.
Of course, the next eight episodes still have to be filmed, which Deadline says will happen “at a later date” still to be determined. Let’s hope the series gets back into production by the end of 2022 and has a faster turnaround time for a release sometime in late spring or early summer 2023. Stay tuned for more updates on the remaining episodes!
